At nuclear power plants, most of the removal operations of large equipment and/or materials from radiation controlled areas take place on completion of a scheduled outage.

The equipment and/or materials are subjected to contamination surveys before they are removed.

But the survey generally requires the involvement of a large work force for a short duration of time.

To provide a solution to this problem, we have developed the “Large Equipment Removal Operations Monitor,” which is “a rugged and easy to operate monitoring device without the need for a large work force”.

This device is capable of surveying contamination on large equipment, such as a scaffolding plate as large as 1800mm x 900mm, in one single operation.

Furthermore, the plastic scintillation detector can be moved up and down to follow the contours of the object under inspection allowing a survey to be performed close to the object.

Because of this, low levels of contamination can also be detected, demonstrating high sensitivity for all levels of contamination.
The Large Equipment Removal Operations Monitor has a fine reputation among its users with such comments as, “we have been able to reduce the survey time to 1/16 compared with the labor-intensive survey we used to perform”.

The product line includes Removal Operations Monitors for medium and small-sized equipment/materials to suit the different situations of the user such as the space allowed to place the monitor, the size of the equipment to be inspected, the necessity of moving the monitor from one place to another, etc.

In nuclear power plants, computerized control systems for work in the radiation environment are used for effective safety control.

For further efficient system management, we developed an intelligent electronic dosimeter under the concept of how we can support our customers.

In order for the system to be managed efficiently, the date to be entered into the system must be of real time and intelligent nature.

For example, for those who access the controlled area, we offer various electronic dosimeters which enable direct data output of the access authority, dose values, and so on.

Since small memory devices are mounted in these dosimeters, besides being capable of measuring the b-rays and neutrons, such intelligent data as the work titles and the trend data of dosage can be delivered to the system.

As a result, our system realized the delivery of useful data that can be utilized for the exposure reduction measures at a later date, without giving any loads to the data processing by the system.

In addition, by featuring the communication capability, data transfer to the system terminals is possible without removing the dosimeter.

In the future, we will develop the electronic dosimeters which are capable of direct reading of legal dosage of H1cm and H70mm, thus offering intelligent tools for more efficient management of control systems at our customers' facilities.

Conventionally, for article removed from the controlled areas within nuclear power plants, the manual inspections have been carried out by using survey meters.

Particularly in the case of handling the large-sized equipment, considerable labor and time were required, which resulted in increased indirect expenses.

We tackled these problems of our customers, and developed a monitoring system in which the measurement of large-sized equipment was fully automated.

Since such large equipment removal monitoring systems enable the automatization of measurements in terms of both high sensitivity and precision, the side benefits, including the improved productivity of persons who are involved in the examination work, are inestimable.

Furthermore, we offer tools which strongly support the management of the existing control system for work in the radiation environment in operation at our customers' facilities .

Previously, the radiation counts were filled in on record formats, the personal and environmental data were prepared in the control room, and all such data were entered in to the control system.

We analyzed the customers' processes closely and successfully developed an electronic dosimeter as a tool reflecting the computerized technologies.

With the dosimeter, the processes, including the trend data of dosage, that may possibly be burden to the system can be performed in advance and output in real time, which contributes to the realization of effective system management.

Chiyoda Technol will support the safety control operations at nuclear power plants based on the “extensive point of view” and the “excellent products.”
